ABOUT PERSIST

The UC Riverside Women’s Resource Center and the Conference Committee welcome you to the third annual Persist: Women’s Political Engagement Conference at UCR. The 2019 agenda will bring you closer to visionary California State Senators, trailblazing women holding local office, dedicated non-profit CEOs, fearless political organizers, the first undocumented woman from the Inland Empire to go to law school, and many other game changers! We're hoping that a day spent surrounded by powerful messages from politically-active women will inspire you to persist with your goals of getting involved in the political realm. Whether you're interested in running for office, working for an elected official or non-profit, becoming a lobbyist, media professional, consultant or activist — this conference is designed to enlighten you and empower you to get engaged in the political arena.   • Organizing for America’s Worker: Women in Labor Unions – HUB 268

    Moderator: Professor Ellen Reese, UCR's Department of Labor Studies

    Panelists: Maria Coronado of Southwest Regional Carpenters Union, Ana Cabral of United Food and Commercial Workers, and Celine Perez of Inland Empire Central Labor Council

  • justCARE: The Power of Student Organizing – HUB 355

    Presenter: Jessy Rosales, justCARE Campaign

    This session will talk about the history of justCARE (Campus Action for Reproductive Equity), and its beginnings at Berkeley and how it became an entire state-wide campaign. Come learn about what justCARE is doing now and how you can be a part of it on your own campus. You will also learn about what it takes to build a campaign, how to gain such wide-spread support and mobilize hundreds. justCARE started with students, and students are integral to organizing movements. Come and empower yourself!

  • Advocacy, Partnership, and Solidarity: The Underground Scholars Initiative – HUB 367

    Presenters: Jazmin Garcia, Bibiana Canales, Xochil Ramirez, and Fidel Chagolla

    The Underground Scholars Initiative will discuss the systematic influences of the school-to-prison pipeline, and the efforts of students and community members in reversing it to form a prison-to-university pipeline. Our session will brainstorm different forms of advocating, recruiting and retention with higher education, and how these efforts will lead to agency.

  • Close The Gap – HUB 260

    Close the Gap California is a statewide campaign to achieve gender balance in the California Legislature by recruiting progressive women to run. We recruit accomplished women in targeted districts and prepare them to launch competitive campaigns. Our recruits are pro-choice, pro-public school funding, and support paths out of poverty. Come to this session to learn more about our work!

  • Running for Office 101: #ThisIsEmerge – HUB 355

    Presenter: Melanie Ramil, Emerge CA Executive Director

    This session will provide an overview of Emerge California that includes our work to recruit, train and support Democratic women who want to run for office.

  • Trauma-Informed Activism – HUB 367

    Presenter: Sasha Cogbill, Riverside Area Rape Crisis Center

    This session talks about organizing and advocating through a trauma-informed lens.

  • Women in Politics: IGNITE – HUB 268

    Presenter: Anais Franco and Annie Delgado

    We will redefine our mission statements and dig deeper into the idea of nonpartisanship in IGNITE. We will reconnect with our roots and understand WHY we do what we do and the importance of women in politics. You'll leave inspired, connected to your "why" and connected with your fellow allies.

  • Parenting & Politics – HUB 260

    Presenter: Yvonne Chamberlain Marquez, R’Kids

    Panelists: Lizeth Vega of Alvord School Board, Abigail Medina of San Bernardino School Board, and Patricia Lock Dawson of Riverside Unified School Board

    Connect with the R’Kids President and other school board members to learn about engaging your local elected officials to better advocate for children in our communities. Hear about the experiences of being a mother in the political arena.
